Daily Tech History: September 7, 1927 — Farnsworth Transmits the First All-Electronic TV Image

On September 7, 1927, 21-year-old inventor Philo Farnsworth successfully transmitted the first all-electronic television image from a makeshift lab in a converted dining room in San Francisco. The image was about as simple as it gets: a single straight line, painted in black on a glass slide, captured by his “image dissector” camera tube and displayed on a receiver in the next room.

What made the moment significant wasn’t the image itself but the method. Earlier television experiments relied on spinning mechanical discs to scan pictures — a dead-end technology. Farnsworth’s image dissector instead used a beam of electrons to “dissect” a picture line by line and convert it into an electrical signal, the same basic principle that would power television for the next several decades. When his small team — including his wife and his backer George Everson — watched the line on the receiver rotate exactly as the slide was rotated in the other room, they became, by most accounts, the first people in history to witness electronic television actually working. Farnsworth had filed his patent for the system just months earlier, in January 1927, and would spend years afterward defending it in a bitter legal fight with RCA over who really invented TV.

Farnsworth was largely self-taught and reportedly first sketched the idea for electronic scanning as a teenager, inspired by the back-and-forth rows of a plowed field. It’s a fitting origin story for a technology that would go on to reshape how the entire world got its news and entertainment.
