Portrait of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs

On October 5, 2011, Apple co-founder Steve Jobs died at his home in Palo Alto, California, at the age of 56. He had stepped down as Apple’s chief executive only weeks earlier, in late August, and his death was announced by Apple the same day. For many people, the news landed as a personal loss, even if they had never met him.

Jobs had a hand in more of the modern consumer tech world than almost anyone. He helped launch the Apple II and the Macintosh, was pushed out of Apple in 1985, and came back in 1997 to steer the company through a near-collapse. The return kicked off a run of products that reshaped entire industries: the iMac, the iPod, the iPhone, and the iPad. Obituaries from that week pointed to his talent for turning complicated gadgets into things ordinary people wanted to hold.
